Halloween Food – Sweet Sushi

This is not inherently creepy (though with some creative labeling, it can be), like the other Halloween Food we’ve featured this month, but it is unusual and fun, and always a hit at the halloween party. I’ve posted about this before, but I’m finally writing real instructions. [Note, no fish were harmed in the making of this, it's all nicely vegetarian sweets!]

Dessert Sushi:
The full spread of the dessert sushi!

This is really simple to make, and has tons of creative opportunities.

You’ll need:
“Rice” The base is your basic rice krispy treat recipe.
“Fish” – various dried fruits (mango, papaya, & candied ginger all work well, but just go wild in the dried fruit bins)
“Nori”- green or purple fruit leather (fruit rollups–or the natural stuff looks even better). If you can find nicely colored strips (like Yogos Rollers or Fruit by the Foot) that makes it even easier. For ours, we cut green fruit rollups into strips for the nigiri and used green Yogos for some of the maki. The Yogos doesn’t look as nice, but it worked in a pinch.
- Condiments: Wasabi Peas, Sliced Candied Ginger

1. Make the rice krispie treat mixture. You’ll need to work quickly, so make it right before you start.

2. Form the rice bases.
Nigiri:
While the rice krispie treats are still warm and workable, form little rectangular pillows with your hands, about 2-3 in long. We tried making a pan the right thickness and cutting out little bars, but I think this worked a little better (more realistic) — but you can do that and then just round them out with your hands.

Maki: Spread a 3/4 in thick slab (or whatever you want the height of your maki to be, should match the width of your nori strips), and use a small round cookie cutter (I think we used a tomato paste can) to cut circles for your faux maki.

3. Decorate
Nigiri:
Mango or Ginger can be used as is, just place on top and wrap with a strip of ‘Nori’.
Papaya looks great if you slice it, exposing it’s lovely orange-red center.
Maki:
Wrap the sides of the circle with a “nori” strip.
Press small chunks of various colors of fruit or candy into the center of the circle, to give the illusion of a roll.
Halloween option: If you have extra fruit leather in various colors, you can make these into eyes by cutting out a small circle (pupil) and a larger circle (iris), and placing them in the center, instead of the true sushi look.

4. Serve with wasabi peas and sliced candied ginger.

Monster BallsIf you have any leftover rice krispie mixture, you can make these fun monster balls, using gummy body parts!

Camping – Roosevelt State Park, Pine Mountain GA

We had a really fun time this weekend camping, so I figured I’d writeup a review of where we went and some tips/tricks you might be interested in! Got more camping tips? Post ‘em in the comments!

Review:

For this trip, we had a big group – 17 people including 5 kids from 3 to 14. For budget reasons, as well as for privacy with this size group, we rented a ‘pioneer’ campsite at FD Roosevelt State park, about 1 1/2 hrs from Atlanta. This was an incredibly budget friendly option, as the entire campsite, with plenty of room for all of us, cost only $30 total! They also have regular campsites, which would have been a little less ‘roughing it’. The state park has hiking, a lake, and a pool, and is located near a good number of family friendly attractions, including Calloway Gardens, FDR’s ‘Little Whitehouse’, horseback riding, an Animal Safari, and more.

The Pioneer campsite was great for our large group. We had 5 tents, a wooden shelter, plenty of room, and nobody else around. Drive up, no hiking into the woods, but you still felt like your were in the middle of nowhere. Disadvantages were that there was running water up the hill, but no shower/bathroom facilities or electricity nearby. Yes, my friends, we had an outhouse. But really, except for when we figured out a car electricity adapter won’t run a coffee pot (oh no, should have brought the french press!), the lack of amenities was doable for a short weekend trip. As I mentioned, they also have regular ‘car camping’ campsites that have more modern amenities, if you’re not into roughing it QUITE so much.

Camping Tips:
1 – Make a list, check it twice. We figured out food ahead of time (hamburgers friday night, low country boil Sat night) and split up needed supplies among everyone, sharing the list using Google Docs so it could all be done over email. That way we didn’t end up with 7 rolls of aluminum foil but no paper towels.

2 – Google before hand and find out what’s close by (where’s the grocery store, any attractions)– and what time they close! –in case you have to make a run for more supplies.

3 – Luminaries – I brought cheap paper bags, and a bag of votive and tea light candles. The kids enjoyed putting dirt in the bags, and they made simple, easy to transport lighting for once it got dark. They don’t put out a lot of light, but at least you can line the way from the campfire to the tents or to the bathroom.

4 – Bring twice as much wood as you think you’ll need. And identify the closest gas station that sells wood in case you need it. Ditto ice.

5 – Toys for kids – Dumptrucks, Tonka construction equipment and sand pails / shovels for collecting dirt, rocks, sticks, whatever, were very popular items. There was also a playground nearby (driving).

6 – Kiddie potty. I brought The Boy’s little potty from his potty training days, even though we didn’t have anyone still potty training in the group. The two 3 yr olds and the 5 year old all used it. I brought Clorox wipes to ensure it stayed clean. It’s also great to have available in the car on the trip just in case you have to pull over to the side of the road for a potty emergency.

7 – If you do go for the no real facilities option like we did, one fabulous idea was a handled little basket stocked with baby wipes, toilet paper, a flashlight, and hand sanitizer. That way you just picked up the basket and had everything needed for trips to the primitive loo.

8 – An oldie but goodie: Juice boxes and bottled water can be pre frozen, and serve to keep things cold in the cooler, but will thaw by the time you need them. We packed them up with the lunch meats and bagel spreads and that worked perfectly.

9 – Useful stuff: Baby Wipes! A propane burner or stove (we had a big pot and did a low country boil, and heated water much quicker than the campfire for coffee and such. Bottled Water (including several large jugs for cooking, in case the ‘local’ water didn’t look too good — it didn’t.)

I’d add more if I think of it! If you’ve got good tips, post them!…

A Dabbled Re-run – Henri the Hexapus Tutorial

While Dot is off remembering why she thinks ‘roughing it’ is a hotel without room service, you get a repeat of a project you might have missed!

Henri is a fun little puppet made out of recycled sweater sleeves – more on Henri here.. If you liked the hand drawn tutorial for the Monster Wreath, you might like this too!

octopus-tutorial
Click through to see/download the full size instructions.

Materials needed:
Two coordinating sweaters, felted. 1 sleeve from each.
Felt for eyes
Buttons (if you’re up for the fun of sewing on all those suckers!)
Embroidery thread
I sewed everything but the embellishments on the machine.

Prototype Henri:
Henri, the Octo-puppet

This can be modified to do a stuffed toy rather than a puppet by simply stuffing the head fully, and then sewing up the secondary sweater where the legs meet.

If you try him, please let me see your results, and you can post to the Dabbled flickr group : http://www.flickr.com/groups/dabbled/

Illustration Friday – Strings

This is based off a character I created for a book a while back, a marionette dancer. I like the character, so I decided to reinvent her for today’s IF. Watercolor pencil, no digital this time. I love the sad feeling she invokes.

Housecleaning, Updates and Links

Watercolor pencil - Little MonsterSo, a busy week. I got the donations for the auction all put together. For those who gave feedback earlier, I decided to go with the pair of girl/boy robots and the Little Monster drawings for the auction. Plus, I’m donating the custom invitation design mentioned yesterday, so I printed the samples to be included with the certificate. Unfortunately, my laser printer is really not printing well. I checked the toner and cyan is at 18%, so maybe that’s the problem. Hmm, anyone know anything about laser printers? Should I just order more cyan and see if that helps?

A photographer friend is also donating a photoshoot to the auction, and his internet went down, so I helped him by spiffying up his website. If you remember, it’s the one I did for him using my blogger techniques. Check it out, and let me know if you have any feedback. Also, if you’re in the Atlanta area, and you need a photographer for wedding, childrens, or portrait photography, check him out and let him know Dot sent you!

Last night I went to a meetup for readers of Ask Moxie… Moxie was in Atlanta and we all had a fun dinner at The Flying Biscuit. Was much fun — Any Dabbled readers in atlanta who want to do a Dabbled meetup? Though next time I don’t think I’m bringing The Boy… he acted up all evening, sigh.

Today is the Auction, then off to camping for the weekend with friends Sat morning. And are we packed? No. Have I bought all the supplies? No. Hmm, to-do list keeps getting longer… and I haven’t even started on Halloween!

Also, you may have noticed I just put up Blogher ads on the right side. I’ve been avoiding any ad content, but I figured I’d try it out and see whether it was worthwhile. Let me know if you have any feedback on that.

Let’s see, how about some cool links:

Party Invitations

For the boy’s school auction this week, I’m giving away a custom graphic for a party invitation. So I pulled together some sample images to show what was possible. I like what I did for the samples, so I figured I’d stick them in my (never before used) etsy store (cheap!). So if you’d like a customized version of any of these (change the text to match your party details), you can get it there–it will be delivered via email. I’m only doing a few of each this cheap, so consider it limited edition :). [oh, if your next party's a ways off, you can buy now, and just email me the details later.]

Sample Party Invitations

I’ve also got a customized version of the Robot Party invites out there. You can just download the generic version here, for free, but doesn’t it look nicer customized… and you could be funding dot’s art supply habit? :)

And of course, if you want a truly customized one like I’m giving away for the auction, just email me.

Dot's Easy Tiramisu "Martinis"

NOT a tiramisu martini, I know. But it's a cool picture!
This is the recipe for the dessert I did a while back for a dinner party. There are no rules, and little measurement, so just have fun with it!

Not a Tiramisu Martini, but a cool picture anyway! –>

Dot’s Easy Tiramisu “Martinis”

Makes 10-12 servings

Martini glasses

1 pint (2 cups) heavy cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 pkgs (16 oz) Marscapone Cheese
Dollop of marsala (optional)
Dollop of vanilla
2 Dollops of kahlua

Ladyfingers – 4-6 per glass
3/4 – 1 c strong coffee or espresso
Kahlua (1/2 c?)
Cinnamon
Chocolate chips (opt)
Chopped pecans (opt)

In mixer (with whisk attachment) whip cream and powdered sugar until you get soft peaks. (if you dont have a mixer you can do this by hand with a whisk, but it’s more work). remove about 3/4 c. to use later.

Add the next set of ingredients and beat to combine. (i prepared this a bit ahead and placed it in a ziplock bag, then when it came time to put it in the glasses, i snipped of the end of the bag and “piped” it in)

In each martini glass, place your cookies around the inside. Save a half or whole cookie for the top.

Pour on the coffee, trying to soak each cookie. Pour a little Kahlua over the cookies as well (i just held my fingers over the top of the bottle, and spurted a little out for each glass).

Spoon in a big scoop of your marscapone mixture. top with the reserved cookie. Add a dollop of reserved whipped cream if you like (i ended up with enough in each glass without the whipped cream, so i skipped it.)

Sprinkle ground cinnimon on top, add a sprinkling of chocolate chips and/or chopped pecans.

Let chill during dinner, then serve!

(note: i had a heck of a time the first time I made this finding ladyfingers. ask in the bakery dept of your grocery store if you cant find them. I had to get ones with cream filling and scrape off the cream filling!!if you cant find them you can probably use some thinly sliced spongecake or poundcake. I think I saw some at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s recently too.)

Halloween Tutorial – Monster Wreath

I’ve been promising more Halloween tutorials, so here’s another one for you! We made this halloween monster wreath for halloween in 2005… It’s pretty easy to make, and is a perennial favorite decoration, so I’ve written up a tutorial on it–since I didn’t have any pictures of the making of it, you get my fabulous hand drawings..sorry!

*note: I don’t remember where I got the idea from, but the idea of a monster wreath is not original with me, but I really like my version! Also thanks to Chica and Erika who did most of the creation of the original one, as I was trying to decorate for the party!

Updates: More, including a quick no-sew version. (On flickr)
-And thanks to the reader who pointed out the tutorial on craftster — That could have entirely been the inspiration, especially since it’s so similar to my no-sew version! I loves the crafty internets!
